George Maddison's Diary

George Maddison, a former lecturer, and his wife Angela, were forced out of their home by the fumes from a neighbouring dry cleaning company. They were both seriously ill as a result of their chemical exposure. They endeavoured unsuccessfully to obtain redress in the courts for over a decade. These extracts from George's Diary document both his horrifying symptoms and his heroic but ultimately doomed struggle to keep fighting on for justice. George passed away in 2005.

Tuesday 19th August 07:05hrs. Not such a good night. Up three times for urination and each times had problems of kidney pains getting off to sleep again.

For the last few months I have been collating all of the various files of my first and second Solicitors'. I am doing this because my health is failing and I must leave documentary evidence that will support all that has happened to us since the early 1980s. Unfortunately Angela cannot help me, her exposure to the dry cleaning chemicals has left her sensitised to the photocopier chemicals plus her confused mental state when under stress makes it impossible for her to assist me. It is a living nightmare of problems.

Thank God the printer is holding out, although the old ribbon is now badly worn, it must last a little longer for I cannot afford to replace the number one for master printing.

Friday 22nd August Bad night. Could not rest, brain hyperactive, down twice for loo. Up at 06:00, had half a beta block to settle 'flutters', worked for a couple of hours.

Postman called. I immediately opened letter - to my horror it contained two summons. One was for me to attend a hearing on the 20th August '97 this Wednesdays gone! I then contact my current lawyer for advice.

It was only a few weeks ago that whilst chasing up the Legal Aid Board for a reply to our Assessment appeal they had informed me that they had not received my 'appeal bundle' nor the soft faxed copy.

Saturday 23rd August 07:30hrs. Mind and body in turmoil. Had another beta block to settle nervous reactions also because my heart was irregular.

Printer playing up. I now have to switch it off after each page to get a printout. Staggered on until Angela gently but firmly told me to get into the bath. I at once fell asleep in it. Got out cold and completely shattered.

Sunday 24th August 06:20hrs. Awoke with piercing pains in the bladder and gut. Managed to get to the toilet without having an accident. I feel like death without being warmed up. Get back into bed - awoke at 11:40hrs. Tried to get back into work, hopeless, mind not in gear, left eye not in focus, throbbing head and fluttery chest. No food all day.

Monday 25th August Bad night, with nightmares and up four times urinating.

Thursday 23rd October Went down to workshop and repaired hymn books for church. I was aware of the fumes affecting me so I cut short the remainder of the books.

Saturday 25th October My Nails are very brittle and my left thumb nail is badly split (this is the one that has never healed properly since 1984/5 when they were all splitting like palm fronds).

Sunday 26th October Not such a good night, aches and pains kept me awake. Three times for urination. Had to take painkillers to ease pains especially in the top three rows of ribs and sternum, it is as if they have been hammered. Each bone is sensitive like a large boil. Glad to go to church as I could not concentrate.

Monday 27th October Another bad night, bladder and organ pains coupled with all skeletal frame, had to take two painkillers. Tried to work, found that I could not do even the easiest of tasks. Funny thing, I know what I am doing but I can't seem to counteract it. Slight trace of blood in urine test.

Tuesday 28th October A better night, only up twice, aches and pains in the bones have lessened, only took one painkiller. Still cannot do simple tasks. Still have a trace of blood in urine test.

Wednesday 29th October Dental work at 09:30hrs tomorrow. My last meal will be at 18:30hrs. The reason: as an extra precaution just in case they are using chemicals in my teeth casings I may react to.

Thursday 30th October In spite of my horrendous medical history and bulky medical file, the post grad tutor gives me a local anaesthetic before I am aware of it. The treatment went well, but as I got up I realised that my balance was affected. By the time I had reached the bus stop my tinnitus had increased to a 1:1 ratio and I was beginning in concentrating, I was also aware that my heart was irregular - this meant I was probably in Atrial Fibrillation [AF]... All I wanted was to get home.

Went to bed without washing.

Friday 31st October Tried to take my Blood Pressure [BP] and pulse result: machine would not register. I was definitely in AF. Decided not to take my beta block as it might interact with anaesthetic.

Saturday 1st November Rough night up twice for usual. Balance much improved, tinnitus now reduced by 50%. Headache reduced to mild ache. Had another go at BP and pulse, still not stable enough for registering. Still can't concentrate. Appetite OK.

Sunday 2nd November Much better night, balance still poor and heart still in AF. Headache negligible, much improved mental state, eyes 100% normal. However, feel I cannot take church, so missed it. Now copying video tapes for the Environmental Assistance library.
